The Community Acupuncture Movement: Healing Through Shared Experience

An Introduction to Community Acupuncture
The community acupuncture movement began in Portland, Oregon, as a response to the increasing need for affordable healthcare solutions. A group of acupuncturists formed "Working Class Acupuncture" an acupuncture practice with the goal to make acupuncture more assessible to "working class" people like nurses, firefighters, tradespeople, etc). You can learn more about it through watching the documentary "Community Acupuncture: The calmest revolution every staged."
After viewing the documentary I was convinced of the great healing potential of this type of acupuncture. Not only does it allow a person to come in more frequently (as it often needed at the beginning of treatment) but it also creates an energentic healing space by allowing multiple patients to receive treatment simultaneously in a shared setting.
Benefits of Community Acupuncture
One of the primary advantages of community acupuncture is improved access to care. Traditional acupuncture sessions can be prohibitively expensive, limiting the number of visits individuals can afford. In contrast, community acupuncture clinics operate on a sliding scale, enabling patients to receive treatment frequently without significant financial strain. This affordability ensures that individuals can seek healing as needed, contributing to their overall wellbeing.
Moreover, the communal environment itself offers unique benefits. When multiple clients receive acupuncture together, they witness the shared experience of healing, reducing feelings of isolation often associated with health challenges. The tranquil setting of a community acupuncture clinic encourages relaxation and promotes a peaceful atmosphere, allowing clients to unwind while they receive treatment.
Creating a Peaceful Healing Environment
The arrangement of treatment spaces in community acupuncture clinics often includes rooms designed for 2 to 4 patients. These treatment spaces are quiet and peaceful places of healing. The natural sounds of gentle music, combined with the presence of others experiencing similar journeys, creates a supportive ambience that fosters healing.
The community acupuncture movement has profoundly impacted the healthcare landscape in the United States. By emphasizing accessibility, affordability, and an enriching communal experience, it has brought the healing benefits of acupuncture to the forefront of health and wellness discourse. Communities are witnessing improved health outcomes with this approach, paving the way for a more inclusive model of care. Currently there are community acupuncture practices in our local area in Cambridge, Somerville, and Hyde Park. Dr Mitzi Johnson (director of Whole person Health LLC is another medical acupuncturist working in Stoughton. Together we have come to realize that our local area has need for a community acupuncture practice and providing this kind of healing space feels right to both of us.
We have decided to collaborate together to create "Healing Home Acupuncture." This practice is scheduled to open in Summer of 2026. Please see my "coming soon" page to learn how to join our wait list.
